System config utility vista

In this edition of the Windows Vista and Windows 7 Report , I'll share a handful of useful Windows Vista configuration tips and tricks. Vista has a lot of tools that you can employ when troubleshooting a problem.

Unfortunately, these tools are located in various places in the operating system. For example, some are located in the Control Panel, some are located on the Start menu, and some are accessible from the command line. However, unbeknownst to many Vista users, the Tools tab in System Configuration utility provides you with a single access point for a wide variety of useful tools.

You can quickly launch the System Configuration utility by pressing the Windows Start Button and typing the word system. By the time you type sys , System Configuration should appear at the top of the results pane where you can select it. Keep in mind that you'll first have to go through a UAC dialog box. As you can see, when you select a tool in the list box, the command line used to launch that tool appears in the Selected Command box.

On this tab, you may select:. The options on the Boot tab have been changed from the complex syntax-based names in older versions to more user-friendly names. If you select this checkbox, the System Configuration does not keep track of the changes you make to Boot options.

This means that you will not be able to revert the changes by selecting the Normal Startup on the General tab. One additional feature has been added here as well. The Services tab is the same as in Windows XP. On this tab, you can see the list of services that start when you boot your Windows computer. While troubleshooting startup problems on your Windows Vista computer, you may enable or disable these services to identify the service that might be causing the issue.

In other words, you will not be able to undo any changes simply by selecting Normal Startup on the General tab. With this setting enabled, you must manually revert any, and all, changes that you've made previously. The main difference is that in Windows Vista you can now choose and configure the USB port as one of the kernel debugging options. Just like in Windows XP, you can enable or disable individual services at boot time to troubleshoot services that might be contributing to startup problems.

System Configuration will now keep track of the date on which you disabled a particular service. Selecting the Startup tab will show you a list of all the applications that run when the Windows Vista starts, as shown in Figure F. Two new features on the Startup tab include the Manufacturer heading, which can be a big help in identifying an application and Date Disabled heading, which will help you keep track of the date on which you disabled a startup application.

The new Tools tab is a really useful resource to have at your fingertips when troubleshooting configuration errors. As you can see in Figures G and H, the list of tools is comprehensive and includes detailed descriptions.

It's near the upper-left side of the System Configuration window. This is where you can view things like program update processes, Windows services e.

Locate a service you want to disable. Scroll through the list of currently running services until you find the one you want to disable. Services are arranged alphabetically by default. If you don't have a specific service in mind when you open System Configuration, consider leaving the current services alone. Disabling random services can harm your computer. Un-check the service. Click the checkbox to the left of the service to remove the checkmark. You can't disable vital Windows processes e.

Click OK. These are both at the bottom of the window. Doing so will mark the selected service s as disabled and close the System Configuration window.

Click Restart when prompted. This will restart your computer. Once it finishes restarting, your selected service s will officially be disabled.

You can also click Exit without restarting if you want to manually restart your computer later. Safe Mode also sends me to a menu where I choose accounts to open safe mode; I have to choose user account, and it is frozen there, too. What can I do? Yes No.
