There is a reason you don't see many cars with HID hi-beams unless they are single unit bilux lamps , HID bulbs can take up to 30 seconds to warm up to their maximum light output. Anyone who has a car with HID lo-beams knows what I'm talking about. With hi-beams, you want max bright the split second you hit the switch.
Can you imagine hitting your hi-beam switch and then having to wait 30 seconds before you have the full range of the light beam? As for current draw, it is true that HIDs once they are at full operating temp draw very little current. But the ballast and igniter during the warm up period can draw as much as 12 to 18 amps.

For the type of lighting you wrote about, Google up Susquehanna Motorsports. I would recommend you use a pair of those in your aux. That way, you have watts of light on bright, and on low, where it is needed most. Their big plus is that they have both beams. Mix and match to suit yourself.
